Job Description

Education.com is seeking a Senior Manager/Director of Search Marketing to drive revenue and traffic.  S/he will manage a dedicated budget and own the Search P&L. S/he will be instrumental in the revenue growth of Education.com’s new digital subscription products, and play a key role in launching a new educational product.

This role is responsible for the strategy and execution of SEO, as well as our Paid Search program. First and foremost, the candidate must have deep SEO expertise, with expertise in the optimization of content.  Prior experience with commerce sites, successful large scale PPC programs, and/or affiliate programs is a strong plus.  However, we encourage strong SEO candidates to apply even without PPC or affiliate experience.

Job Responsibilities
  • Create and lead the Company SEO roadmap. Work with the Editorial, Product and Engineering teams to create next generation SEO strategies that drive traffic and revenue.
  • Identify and execute SEO best practices for both on-site and off-site search ranking factors and critical updates (Panda, Penguin, etc.)
  • Manage Paid Search program, optimizing cost per click and cost per revenue.  Launch new campaign to support new product launches, with Search P&L responsibility
  • Launch new products and services.  Create SEO and Paid Search programs to drive ‘top of funnel’ traffic all the way through conversion.
  • Monitor, track, and report on key marketing metrics and trends
  • Ensure all pages and digital products are technically optimized for search
Skills & Requirements
  • Minimum 5-7 years SEO experience, ideally for both Publisher and/or Commerce sites that are consumer facing
  • Strong analytic and execution skills. The ability to draw conclusions from data, communicate that data to build consensus, and take decisive action accordingly
  • Experience with web analytics (e.g. Omniture), traffic KPIs, keyword research, and PPC management software
  • Technical knowhow and strong interpersonal skills to evangelize necessary changes to a design and engineering team
  • Past experience managing large Paid Search programs a strong plus
  • Affiliate marketing experiences a plus

PHP/JavaScript Developer

Location: Redwood City, CA
Position Title: Software Engineer/Senior Software Engineer

Education.com is seeking a PHP and JavaScript developer to design & develop new functionality for deployment on our public web site, www.education.com. The ideal candidate for this position has hands-on experience designing and developing advanced PHP and mysql functionality. Technology must not be an impediment for the person in this position; devising and designing the correct solutions are as important as flawless implementation. Education.com is a PHP5-based site built on a custom framework similar to Drupal; the person filling this position must be able to use PHP as second nature and focus on the more important aspects of creative construction of new capabilities. Basically, we're looking for a PHP web developer fanatic who thrives, as we do, on creating the best web sites and seeing them come to life, using the best of the latest technology.

Serious developers only: you must be a proficient PHP and JavaScript developer looking for an opportunity to apply your skills in a small company environment working with a team whose members are passionate about delivering educational content to those who need it.   If you want to see your PHP work used by millions of parents and have the track record of development to back you up, this is a rare opportunity you shouldn't pass up.  We are a small team of half a dozen in engineering and seek someone who wants to play an important role - each member of the engineering team has a great deal of influence over the technology and structure of the web site. We allocate up to 20% of our time to innovation and independent projects; each member of the engineering team is responsible for bringing new ideas, technology, and capabilities to www.education.com.

Technologies and products used at education.com include PHP5, Redhat Enterprise Linux, Apache 2, mootools, Google search, MongoDB, memcache, magento, eclipse.  Developers use high-end workstations with multiple monitors running Linux or Windows (by personal choice).  The physical environment is generous and the location is about 50 paces from a CalTrain station.

Specific Responsibilities
  • With the development team, design of new functionality based on PHP and JavaScript.
  • Evaluation of multiple approaches to solutions, making firm recommendations on engineering alternatives.
  • Fanatical development of the new functionality, carrying it through QA, alpha, and release
  • Keeping Education.com's public site compelling, informative, responsive, and profitable
Background and Skills Needed
  • High energy, open minded, passionate, team-oriented, with a strong sense of what is good and what works.
  • Strong in the following areas:
    • PHP5 web development on high-level frameworks.
    • Development methodology and practice for large/live public web sites.
    • Front-end technologies: HTML5, CSS3, some JavaScript toolkit.
  • Previous experience in key roles for PHP-based public web site(s).
  • Masters degree in in Computer Science, Computer or Software Engineering or the equivalent
  • A passion for the domain, education, is a major plus.
  • A portfolio or a personal PHP-based website as a demonstration of capability is a major benefit.

User Experience Manager

Location: Redwood City, CA
Position Title: User Experience Manager
Duration: Full Time

Education.com is seeking an experienced User Experience person who can lead the interaction design of our public web site, www.education.com, and take a significant role in the interaction design of our suite of interactive educational games. This individual will report to the CTO & VP of Engineering and must be strong in information architecture, visual design, prototyping, and technology, but will work closely with Product Management in the requirements and specification phase of development. The User Experience Lead will ultimately interact with everyone in the company from the CEO through. This broad exposure calls for an individual who works well with people regardless of their background and interests. And because education.com is a small start-up, this is a hand-on position; this individual will "roll up the sleeves" and help build the prototypes and final site.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Ownership of the user experience for all aspects of the public web site
  • Driving the user experience requirements, specification, and development process
  • Develop wireframes and behavioral specifications for new web site features
  • Drive consumer research to develop and validate UI/UX of site and to drive desired consumer behavior and conversion
  • Provide thought leadership on game flow and user experience and motivation/engagement for kid-targeted games
  • Management of a small team of UI designers (internal and external) who implement the site
  • Occasional creative design work for other parts of the company
Background and Skills Needed
  • High energy, open minded, passionate, team-oriented, with a strong sense of what is good and what works
  • Strong in the following areas: information architecture, UE design and validation, visual design, web technology
  • Five or more years with lead responsibility designing consumer-facing content web sites through all life cycle phases
  • Has built successful highly usable content sites
  • Working knowledge of database technology and database-driven web sites
  • Experience with interaction design of online games is a strong plus.

Freelance Opportunities: Graphic Designers

Education.com offers freelance opportunities for graphic designers to create worksheets and coloring pages for kids. Experience in Illustrator, and and an interest in illustrating for children required.

The aim of these pages is to help parents support the learning of important curriculum skills and give kids a fun activity. You will be guided on curriculum, and be part of the brainstorm process for all worksheet designs.
