The rebus is a form of written communication that precedes the first alphabets. There are many ways to make a rebus, but the most common form uses pictographs that sound like a word in place of a word or in combination with words to make messages.  For example, think of pictures that can be used to make this message: eye can sea ewe. The following activity combines some of the most common sight words with busy hands for a winning combination of learning and creativity!

What You Need:

  • Glue
  • Old catalogs or magazines with pictures that can be cut out
  • Pencil or crayon
  • Paper to write in-between words (lined paper especially made for beginning writers works well)
  • Construction paper to use as background
  • Scissors
