Help your child to build her fine motor skills, improve letter recognition skills, explore basic mathematics concepts and build vocabulary with a fun filled alphabet accordion book making activity. Fold it up into an accordion shape and keep it handy for daily letter practice!

What You Need:

  • Roll or butcher paper in a light color
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Crayons and/or markers
  • Glitter*
  • Glue*
  • Construction paper*
  • Tempera paint and brush*

* = optional

What You Do:

  1. Have your child use the ruler to help you measure out the paper. You will need a long, thin rectangle with enough space for 26 individual squares or folds (one per letter) and a front cover. Draw light hash marks for each segment with a pencil. The exact size is up to you. Make a smaller version with five by five squares or try something larger.
  2. Cut out the rectangle with the scissors.
  3. Fold the book accordion style, back to front using the hash marks as a guide.
  4. Create a front cover. Brainstorm ideas to name the book such as “My A,B,C’s” or “A Fun Alphabet”. Write the name of the book and draw a simple picture with crayons or markers.
  5. Starting with ‘A’, have your child write one letter on sequential pages.
  6. Choose a word to go with the letter such as “A is for apple”, “B is for bear” or, “C is for cat”. Use the markers and crayons to draw a picture on the matching page.
  7. [Optional] Instead of drawing on each page, have your child cut or tear paper and create a collage image or simply paint the picture. For added sparkle, use glue to draw lines over the picture and sprinkle a bit of glitter on top.
