Do you hear "I forgot" more often than you would like? Give your kid a reason to remember to wash the dishes with a fun and colorful chore checklist!  He'll be able to keep track of all the chores he needs to do, and as an added bonus, he'll be able to compare what he's done with the rest of the family!

What You Need:

  • Chalkboard
  • Sponge
  • Chalk

What You Do:

  1. Before you begin making the checklist, explain to your child that the chalkboard will keep track of what chores everyone in the family needs to complete, not just his own. This can be a good lesson in fairness. Your child can see exactly how his chore schedule matches up equally with everyone else's.
  2. At the top of the chalkboard, have your child write "Our Chore Checklist". Beneath this, he should write the name of each family member.
  3. Help him divide up the chores equally. Remind him that some chores, like mowing the lawn, should only be done by older members of the family. If he makes a mistake when writing the chores on the chalkboard, just wipe it off with a damp sponge.
  4. As each person completes their chores for the day, they'll check the appropriate items off the list. Whoever finishes all of their chores gets a star next to their name. The person with the most stars at the end of the week, gets to pick something for everyone to do together. Prepare for this with a list of “family fun time” activities.
