13 Days of Halloween

Any decent Halloween celebration isn't complete without a cat. Even though this cat has an arched back to look as if it's hissing, it's still cute. This Halloween, your child can make her very own black cat! In the process, she'll learn how to effectively cut ovals, arcs and circles, all from one paper plate! This activity is a great way for your kid to learn basic geometry vocabulary, all while making an adorable wall hanging.

What You Need:

  • Paper plate
  • Black tempera
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • 2-3 white pipe cleaners
  • Medium pom (pink, red, or whatever color your child pleases)
  • Googly eyes
  • Paint brush
  • Glue stick

What You Do:

  1. Have your child paint the paper plate using black tempera. Allow it to dry completely. Ask her to identify the shape of the paper plate.
  2. Help her place her hand, fingers fanned out so her wrist is even with the edge of the plate. Have her draw an oval line around her hand and fingertips using a pencil. This will help to create the correct size for the cat's head.
  3. Make sure to ask her to tell you the difference between an oval and a circle. Then, have her cut out the oval shape. Any extra shavings she cuts off to create the oval can be discarded.
  4. Encourage her to create the cat's tail by drawing an arc on the plate, which should follow the contour of the oval she already cut out. Ask her to identify something she's seen in nature that resembles this shape (For example: A rainbow!).
  5. Help her glue the cat's head and tail in place from behind the painted paper plate, so the surface or all the shapes showing is entirely black.
  6. Glue on the googly eyes.
  7. Have her cut her whiskers and glue them in place.
  8. Finally, encourage her to glue on the pom to complete the cat's nose.

Display your fierce cat in an unexpected place and hopefully you'll give someone a good scare.

Hisssss...meeooow!
