Using a ruler correctly is an important skill, and this activity is the perfect way to practice! First estimate, then measure different line segments in this game. Use a deck of cards to determine the length of the lines you will seek out. Help your child work with the metric side of a ruler to compare different lengths using centimeters. Try to claim the most lines on the game board in order to win!

Terms to Know:

line segment: a straight line with a beginning and ending point

What You Need:

  • One deck of playing cards (Print a deck.)
  • One metric ruler (scaled in centimeters)
  • One Let's Estimate! game board (Print this out.)
  • A different colored highlighter/pencil/marker for each player

What You Do:

  1. Shuffle the deck and place it face down next to the game board. (For the purposes of this game, aces = 1, jacks = 11, queens = 12, and kings = 13.) Allow each player to choose a different color highlighter, pencil, or marker.
  2. Each player takes a turn drawing one card from the pack. They must find a line segment on the game board equal to the length of their card in centimeters. (For example, if a player draws a 7, they need to find a line that is 7cm long.) They highlight/color their line and label it with its length.
  3. If a player makes an error in measurement, they may not label a line. If a player cannot find a line to fit their card, they must pass.
  4. Play until all line segments are colored or time is up. The player who has colored and labeled the most line segments wins.
