Advent wreaths are a great way to count down the weeks until Christmas and to focus on the spiritual aspects of the holiday season! Making a natural Christmas wreath will help your child learn to use the natural things found around her, and after Christmas passes, the pieces of the wreath can be replaced in their natural environment. Reusing and respecting the environment are important lessons to instill in your child.
What You Need:
- Branches from the trees you have in your yard
- Piece of cardboard
- One pink candle
- Three purple candles
What You Do:
- Take your child outside and collect branches from around the yard. Evergreen branches work best because they stay green longer, but your child can use whatever is available.
- Put the cardboard on a flat work surface to create the wreath's foundation.
- Let your child arrange the branches in a circle on the cardboard. If necessary, you can use a little hot glue to hold everything in place.
- Arrange the candles on the inside of the branches so they create a square within the round wreath.
- When you light the candles of your Advent wreath, be sure to not leave them unattended even for a little while. Using a natural Advent wreath is more flammable than the ones you can buy in the store.
- When Christmas is over, you can pull the branches apart and through it in your compost bin or at the back of your property. The cardboard can be recycled, and the candles can be reused.
This is a great activity that you can do with your children each year to prepare for Christmas! Each new winter, take a picture of the wreath your child makes, and one day she will be delighted to reflect back on past Christmases.
