Kids at this age need many activities to help them practice speaking and writing using correct grammar. Learning the parts of speech can be fun with this game of Grammar Trivia.

What You Need:

10 index cards (or construction paper cut into cards)

1 small basket (or bag)

pencil

What You Do:
Step 1

Tell your child she'll be making a fun game where she gets to test parents and other family members' grammar skills! Have her write each of the following questions on one of her cards:

1. Which word describes a person, place, or thing?

2. Which word describes an action?

3. Which word is used at the beginning of a special phrase?

4. Which word is used to connect two words or phrases?

5. Which word describes a special person, place, or thing?

6. Which word is used to modify another word?

Step 2

Now have your child write one answer card for each of the questions in Step 1: noun, verb, preposition, conjunction, proper noun, adverb. She should write the word naming the part of speech, and then write a complete sentence underneath the word as an example. Have her highlight the part of speech used in the sentence. For example, for the first answer card she could write:

"noun"

She drove a car down the street.

Step 3:

Have your child mix up the question cards and place them in a basket (or bag.) Now gather round the family. (It's fun when aunts, uncles and grandparents play, too!) Each player should draw a question card from the basket. Have your child read the question aloud. If the player does not answer correctly, place the card back into the basket. If he does answer correctly, have your child show the answer card and read it aloud. Place the question and its answer card in a separate pile on a table. Continue this process until all of the questions have been correctly answered.
