Get inspired by the colors of the rainbow and make gorgeous colored ice cubes! Simply grab some juice and food coloring to help your child create a chilled treat that reflects the beauty of the color spectrum.
What You Need:
- Ice cube trays
- Purple food coloring
- Blue food coloring
- Green food coloring
- Yellow food coloring
- 6 small cups
- 5 spoons
- Water
- Orange juice
- Red fruit punch
- Large clear glasses
- Water
- Freezer
What You Do:
- Have your child pour water into four of the small cups.
- Help her squeeze a few drops of the purple food coloring into the first cup, blue in the second, green in the third and yellow in the fourth.
- Let her pour orange juice in the fifth cup and red fruit punch in the sixth cup.
- Time to load up the ice trays with her rainbow cups! Help her gently pour each cup into the ice tray. Make sure she doesn't pour too fast or the colors will splash and mix (be warned: purple and blue water, for example, make an unappealing murky brown shade.)
- Have her place the filled ice trays into the freezer.
- Let the ice freeze completely. Depending on your freezer, this may take several hours.
- Once the ice has frozen, have your child remove the trays from the freezer.
- To follow the natural colors of the rainbow, have your child place the colored ice cubes in the glass in this order: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
- Once the glass is filled with ice cubes, add water -- or a clear carbonated beverage.
- Serve immediately. While rainbow ice cubes look great immediately after being frozen, food coloring and watered down juice don't taste too yummy once the cubes melt!
You and your child can also replace all the food coloring with other natural juices like grape juice or lemonade.
