Make Your Own Sock-Box
Topics: Second Grade, Arts and Crafts
This activity will knock your child's socks off—literally! Show her how to make her own mailbox with this piece-of-cake project that will hang from her doorknob. Made out of an everyday gym sock and fabric paint, this mini-mailbox will be a colorful spot for you to stash her reminders, treats, and lunch money. There's finally a use for that loner sock that mysteriously lost its partner in the dryer!
What You Need:
- Plain gym sock in either black or white
- Fabric Paints
- Scissors
- Needle and thread in the same colour as the sock
What You Do:
- Take a sock and cut a slit in the side of it, about two inches down from the top. Cut no more than 3 inches.
- To be sure that the cut doesn’t tear any further, sew on the edges of the cut with a needle and thread.
- Have your child take some fabric paint and decorate her sock. She can add embellishments if so desired, but fabric paint works great.
- Allow the sock to dry for at least 24 hours.
- When the sock is dry and you are sure that the fabric paint won’t run, your child can hang the sock on her door.
While your child is out, in school or off to a friend’s house, why not surprise her with a special gift in her "sock-box"? A loving note or piece of candy is sure to brighten her day!
