Looking for a last minute present? This homemade hurricane candle holder is a breeze to make, and its pretty glow really brightens up a table or mantle. Get kids crafting! All you need is some tissue paper, glue, a paintbrush, and an old jar.

What You Need:

  • Colored tissue paper
  • Pressed flowers or leaves (optional)
  • White school glue
  • Small plastic bowl or disposable container
  • Paintbrush
  • Glass jar
  • Markers

What You Do:

  1. Give your child a few sheets of tissue paper and ask her to rip it into small pieces (2-3 inches).
  2. In the small bowl or container, mix ½ cup of white glue with 1 ¼ cups of water. It should form a thin white solution. Give your child the paintbrush and have her cover a section of the jar with a thin coat of glue solution. Repeat, overlapping the tissue paper pieces, until the entire jar is covered. Talk to your child as she works about the different colors formed as she overlaps the tissue (for example, yellow and blue make green, red and blue make purple). When the entire jar is covered, overlay a few pressed leaves or flowers (if you’re using them), and cover each with a thin coat of glue solution.
  3. If she’d like, let your child add some final touches with her markers—a personal message, her name, or some drawings. Then place a votive candle inside your new hurricane and wrap it up! When the candle glows, it will illuminate the tissue paper and designs, allowing light to shine through them.
