Valentine's Venn Diagram Activity

In this simple math activity, your young learner will compare two types of Valentine’s Day candy using a Venn Diagram. A Venn Diagram is usually drawn as two circles, one around each set. There's also an overlap between the sets showing which things belong in both groups. Although most Venn Diagrams are drawn with circles, we just had to use hearts—it is Valentine’s Day after all!

What You Need:

  • Red or pink paper
  • A black marker
  • Valentine’s Day jelly beans (red, white and pink)
  • Conversation Heart candies

What You Do:

  1. Use the marker to draw a pair of overlapping hearts on the red or pink paper. Be sure to draw it so that the overlap is large enough to hold several white Conversation Hearts.
  2. Now separate out a handful of white jelly beans.
  3. Show your child the two types of candy. Place the white jelly beans in one of the hearts on the Venn Diagram. Tell her that this heart is for white candies.
  4. Now show your child the Conversation Hearts. Have her place them in the second heart. Explain that this heart is for heart-shaped candies.
  5. If one heart is for white candies and one heart is for heart-shaped candies, which candies go in the overlap? It may take a few hints on your part – if one heart is for white candy and one heart if for heart-shaped candy, where they overlap is for candies that are both white and heart-shaped.
  6. Help your child move the white Conversation Hearts into the overlap.

Expand on this activity by having your child retry it, but this time tell her that one heart is for pink candies and the other for hearts. Continue with the remaining colors until you kid has a good grasp on how Venn Diagrams work.
