What we like best:
What you should know:
If you're looking for preschool phonics practice, this isn't the app for you, regardless of what the name suggests. The voice-over only gives the name of the initial letter of the word—“bee” not “buh,” for example—and although the developer suggests each letter can be pressed to hear individual sounds, that feature isn't available on the app we reviewed.
But that doesn't mean kids can't take anything away from the content. This intuitive app allows children to work on their handwriting skills while learning spelling, letters and animal sounds. Children choose colors—red, yellow, green or blue—to trace either the first letter or the full animal name over the dotted lines. The tracing sensitivity is perfect for small fingers and the size of the letters is just right for writing practice. But little ones who hoped for a multi-colored word might be disappointed—when a color is chosen, it changes the entire word, not each letter at a time.
This review is for the free lite version, which features all the elements of the paid app—but to access the entire alphabet you'll need to upgrade to the full version.
