Full Review:

Oh no! Mr. Crab’s sandcastle has been washed away by a giant wave, and it can only be rebuilt—and redecorated—by kids writing and spelling words that sail past the beach.

This teacher-designed app is an extremely in-depth early literacy tool that addresses a wide variety of skills, from letter and word recognition to early writing and phonics, all tied to Common Core standards. To begin, kids must choose a level of difficulty—3 or 4 letter words—and trace shells in the sand to spell letters. The tracing feature requires the finger and thumb "pincer" grip that sharpens the fine motor skills essential to early writing. A narrator offers an audio accompaniment to the visual cues, and correct answers drop shells into little learners’ buckets to use as sandcastle décor.

Castles are unlocked and ready to be decorated as children progress—kids can save castles to their scrapbook, or clear away their creations and start again. Gorgeous, modern graphics and sound effects complete this cute and comprehensive app—even Mr. Crab gets in on the fun, exclaiming, “That tickles!” each time little fingers tap him.

Teacher Features:
This app is a great game to reinforce early reading skills or complement classroom lessons—the teacher's section includes many classroom activity suggestions.
