What we like best:
What you should know:
Say hello to Daniel Tiger—again! Originally a puppet character on the popular children’s program Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, this tiny tiger is back, this time in animated form. In this adorable app, Daniel teaches preschoolers life lessons and social skills using music and simple games.
He guides kids through daily routines to make ordinary activities—like bedtime, bath time and going to the doctor—easy, understandable and fun. This cuddly cat also uses music to engage and explore emotions. The game begins with an invitation to Daniel’s house, and once kids are inside, they have five different activities to choose from, including Doctor Daniel, Feel the Music, Stickers, Bedtime and Bathroom skills. Since the learning strategies in Daniel Tiger are based on the musical social/ emotional curriculum made popular by the PBS series, tunes play throughout the app. The catchy and repetitive songs are designed to build a child’s emotional vocabulary. The section that concentrates specifically on emotions like happy, sad and mad is successful, because the music really matches each mood.
There is one drawback—if little fingers press too many buttons too quickly, the app can freeze or activate too many features at once. Still, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is stellar readiness app for adults and kids to explore together.
