What we like best:
What you should know:
Looking to help budding writers hone critical fine motor skills? Penmanship practice is common in preschool apps, but iWriteWords is successful in pairing tricky tracing with adorable, kid-friendly animal animation.
Children are tasked with helping Mr. Crab collect numbered balls by following him with their finger, essentially tracing each letter of the alphabet. This app allows pre-writers to work on specific areas of need individually, such as uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers. The game is simple yet effective, but there isn’t much in the way of game play or virtual rewards to keep kids coming back for more. While the tracing element is touted as a game, there aren’t any animated or features that can elevate the task into truly interactive game play.
Despite the lack of bells and whistles, the essential elements of the app are executed well and will give little learners a solid understanding of the ABC’s while strengthening fine motor muscles. The lite version allows potential purchasers to preview all the functions of the game, but to explore the complete alphabet and word list, you’ll need to upgrade to the full version.
