What we like best:
What you should know:
Kindergarten readiness is all the rage these days, so if you’re looking for a way to give kids a jumpstart on learning, this veritable “preschool in your pocket” is for you.
JumpStart Preschool covers a wide range of critical early-learning concepts, from letters and phonics to counting and colors. The app’s main strength is the way it combines multiple learning opportunities into almost every game. A puzzle isn’t just a puzzle; it’s a letter, and once the puzzle is completed, the voiceover emphasizes phonics and the letter name. Picking out a path to a present using instructions such as left, right, above and below lets preschoolers practice directions in a fun and engaging way.
While the variety of skills covered is this app’s high point, the wide selection may emphasize quantity over quality. Some of the games aren’t as developed as they could be—the reading game would benefit from more interaction, and a game about food sizes needs clearer graphics. Another note: if you’re looking for quiet entertainment, this is not the way to go. The directions are spoken aloud and there’s no convenient function to mute the music—which can become annoying.
