Marble Math

Educational Value:
Fun Factor:
Skills:Multiplication, Subtraction, Fractions, Division, Addition

What we like best:

Move the marble through the maze to solve problems—the visual and tactile interface helps reinforce math concepts.

What you should know:

The interface is very busy and has some ads even though this is a paid app. Game play instructions are provided only on the parent-teacher screen.
Full Review:

Your math whiz can drag or roll her marble through the math maze and earn points, while she practices fundamental fourth grade math skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions.

Play starts with choosing an avatar and a marble “style”, whether it's hippie swirls or NBA simplicity. There are 3 levels of difficulty that cover all the basics. The rules are simple, but the problems keep getting harder the more you play. Success earns more marbles, but the big selling point of this app is the ability for multiple players to compete against each other. Share with friends or within a classroom setting and see who's got the most marble mojo. The drag and roll interface adds a fun arcade-like touch. Rolling the ball through the maze is harder than it looks! Players need to tilt the screen back and forth, in a similar fashion to the way you'd work a marble maze in the real world, trying to avoid holes and steer to success.

Some drawbacks? The sound track is annoying (but can be turned off) and the problem sets on level 1 are seriously heavy on Roman numerals. That said, kids will like the tactile feel of this game, most of the problem sets are solid, and it's a safe and simple enough choice that requires little in the way of adult supervision.

Teacher Features:
There's a parent/teacher section that lets an adult manage the users of the game, although the functions are limited. The app supports multiple players making it a good option for sharing in the classroom.
