What we like best:
What you should know:
Word problems can be tricky for 4th graders, who are relatively new to math that comes packaged up with words and numbers. This app brings pictures to the equation, literally, giving students the ability to drag visuals onto their screen as they solve problems.
The interface is simple. Each problem gives kids a workspace that functions as scratch paper, and a stash of “manipulatives” they can drag as they solve a problem. Students can use the workspace for quick computation (fingers work as pencils, and there's a palette of colors to choose from), or they can drag dollars and coins to solve a money question, or physical objects like tomatoes, buckets, and more as they work out addition or subtraction. When they're ready to answer a question, students hit a “solve” button and choose from multiple-choice options. We love that this app gives kids the ability to play with manipulatives—something we haven't seen in many math apps.
Unfortunately, kids can easily skip questions with no consequence, and there's no help when they get a problem wrong. We wish the app had more in the way of hints or help. That said, this app may be useful for quiz type practice, and it's a way to get students' feet wet with word problems.
