Full Review:

This charming tale of tolerance is perfect for the kindergarten set, due to its bright, primary palette and adorable mutant misfits. Once Upon a Mutant follows a young boy on his journey to a town of mean-spirited mutants, and how he helps them learn about acceptance.

When the snarky monsters take aim at the boy’s outfit, he responds by rising above fighting fire with fire. Throughout this slow-paced story, our protagonist struggles to accept that he's different—but ultimately learns to love being unique. This journey teaches his “frenemies” a few things in the process; primarily, that it’s okay to be different, and important to accept those who are different than you. The positive messages and stunning graphics engage even the littlest learners, and help make big concepts of tolerance and acceptance relatable to young children.

Despite the high-quality artwork and message of acceptance, this app falls short in truly engaging young kids. Little ones have the option of reading themselves or listening to a narrator, but that’s it. The addition of interactive activities could boost children’s comprehension skills, and reiterate the overall message to pre-readers. Still, this calmer reading option is great for bedtime, winding down, reinforcing early literacy and teaching acceptable social skills in a kid-friendly way.
