What we like best:
What you should know:
This app is part of a series that lets students from 1st to 6th grade spell in space, as a set of spaceships and planets pass beneath their keyboard.
The fourth grade app comes with 29 lists of grade-appropriate words that range from easy to difficult. Each word in the list is read aloud by a narrator, and kids type it in on a popup keyboard. They aren’t timed as they work through the list and they can listen to the word multiple times if needed. Controls and navigation are easy to use and pretty intuitive, even for small children. That’s the good news. The bad news? The narrator’s voice is garbled and difficult to understand, making it incredibly frustrating for kids to spell words, even if they know them. There’s also no way to enter a custom list, so this app isn’t a good way to practice for weekly spelling tests, a major missed opportunity. This app really wants kids to succeed and it works hard to make spelling a low-stress experience.
The atmosphere in the app, and the fun bonus games kids get as they complete each list, give space boys and girls incentive to play. We sincerely hope the app’s creators will improve the narration quality and create custom list options, to transform this app into out of this world.
