Toca Band

Educational Value:
Fun Factor:
Skills:Rhythm, Music

What we like best:

Cool and quirky characters like Shoe String Charlie or Shaky McBones bring each instrument to life.

What you should know:

The Toca Band only plays one song—it’s perfect for preschoolers, but not so much for parents.
Full Review:

The Toca Boca band is ready to rock! Or jam, or play jazz or whatever little music lovers desire. Budding musicians start with the basics—sixteen crazy characters and a stage with three levels.

Each character represents an instrument, a specific sound, or a singer and the pieces can combined every which way to create unique musical compositions. Like other Toca Boca creations, play is open-ended and experimental, encouraging kids to explore rather than stress about scores. The different musical and sound effects are pulled upstage or down using drag-and-drop functionality, which determines how prominent they are in the final masterpiece and how fast or slow the beat will be. A single character can also be moved to the “star” position and examined up close. Toca Band uses simple touch controls, making it suitable for the littlest composers.

The graphics are great and the characters are cute enough to captivate adults as well as kids, making this an excellent choice for parents and children to explore the world of rhythm, melody and vocal sound together. The app could be improved with a few more song options, but that’s a minor frustration.
