And….they’re off!

Yesterday was Whiz’s first day of first grade.  As I’ve mentioned, I was pretty anxious about the whole thing, but he had an absolutely smashing day.

I was at his school at lunch time (I’m volunteering for lunch and recess duty on Wednesdays…can you believe it?  I VOLUNTEERED to be “the lunch lady”.  Am I out of my mind?)  His teacher came up to me with a funny look on her face and said “This morning I asked the students to introduce themselves to the class by telling us something they love.  So they’d say ‘I’m Jimmy and I love pizza’ or ‘I’m Kate and I love soccer’.  When it was Whiz’s turn he proudly stood up and said “I’m Whiz and I love my teacher.” - that’s right ladies and gentlemen, I’m raising Eddie Haskell.

At the end of lunch I experienced one of the sweetest moments I’ve had as a mom.  All the kids were cleaning up their lunch areas and I called out to Whiz that he’d forgotten to throw away his napkin (which I had of course written a little love note on that morning).  He looked at me shyly and said “I wanted to keep it” and tucked it in his nerdy little uniform shorts pocket.  Wet eyes totally kill your tough lunch lady image I’ll tell you.

On the drive home from school that afternoon I asked what he’d thought of his first day (he’s in a new school this year).  He said “usually I’m pretty scared on the first day of school” (which was cute enough on its own given he’s only had one prior first day of school) “but today I wasn’t scared at all”.

Guess you can’t ask for better than that.

How has the first day of school gone in your house?  Any good mis-steps or adventures?  Anybody get on the wrong bus or get stuffed in a locker?  Anybody have tips to help other parents have a great first day?  Put your adventures in comments here.  We’ll choose one commenter at random (on September 5th) to win a treat from Education.com’s goodie-bag (an office filled with toys, books, and kid-gear galore).  Make sure your email address is included on the comment form so we can contact you for delivery instructions if you win.
