Hi Trinity,

Sounds like you enjoy helping people! You will set to do a lot of good for a lot of people.

There are a few instances in which people can find themselves in a counseling role without college, but this is rare. In general, counselors have at least an Associates Degree (completed junior college), but the majority of counselors have a Bachelor's OR Master's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

Typically, individuals with a Bachelor's Degree are limited as to what kind of work they might be able to do in a community mental health or school setting. In fact, a Master's Degree is often required for these settings. If you are interested in working in a school, you might pursue a Master's in School Counseling (administration and counseling) or School Psychology (psychological and educational testing + counseling). If you are more interested in working in private practice or a community mental health center, you might pursue a Master's in Counseling or Social Work.

It may seem confusing, but you are off to a good start! Talk with your local school counselor and he or she can help guide you further or you can ask us. Good luck, Trinity!
