More then one

More then one

I have one in college now and twins going in a year, my oldest for sure has SM but does it run in famileys? can the other 2 have it also, they have some of the symtoms.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what "SM" stands for. Can you clarify?

Ah, yes, of course. As you may have heard, Selective Mutism is classified as an anxiety disorder. There is quite a bit of research to show that anxiety disorders run in families. That is, a child with selective mutism may have a father with obsessive compulsive disorder and an aunt with social phobia. However, there are other factors that have been related to selective mutism, as well, including stressful environments or underlying language disorders.
 
As you may also know, there are a number of wonderful treatments for selective mutism that have been shown to be very effective. These treatments include helping the child or adult to develop more adaptive coping skills for stressful situations and  techniques for slowly exposing individuals to increasingly more fearful situations until they can eventually tolerate them over time.
