Dyslexia
I enrolled my son in preschool at age 3. He went to preschool for 3 days a week, four hours a day. Also at age 3 I took him to a private speech therapist twice a week, due to his delay in talking. When he went to private kindergarden he pretty much failed, but they did not fail him. So, I checked out a free private school called the Education Center in the town that I live in and let them know of his grades in kindergarden and told them I was not sure if he was ready for 1st grade. The public school has prefirst or D1 which is in between kindergarden and 1st grade. So since this was a private school I thought that he would get more attention than in a public school. So they tested him and said that he was ready for first grade. He made very good grades in first grade(a's and b's). So I thought that the private kindergarden was just harder than normal kindergarden. Then he went to 2nd grade at the private school and thats when he started failing again. So I was very upset.. The way I see it he should have not been making mostly a's and some b's in 1st grade and at the beginning of 2nd grade failing. I felt that they did not get him ready for the 2nd grade. I then put him in public school 2nd grade and he was still failing so I requested him to be tested. And they said he needed to go back to first grade which was very difficult for him when in the first place I should have put him in prefirst. It was in Novemember after he had been in 2nd grade for 3 months. So he was back in first grade and I had him tested and they said he had Dyslexia which I had discussed with all his teachers since he was in kindergarden. Which they said it was to early to test him. The school system does not test for Dyslexia until they are in 2nd grade. Since Dylan was suppose to be in second grade they did test him and said that he did have Dyslexia and put him in a reading recovery class, but did not put him in the MTA class that is for Dyslexia because it was for 2nd graders. He passed the 1st grade with average grades. So then he went to MTA class for Dyslexia in second grade and they took him out of reading recovery. He is now in third grade and was in MTA until two months ago. The MTA class was helping him a little I guess, but not enough, and between the ARD committee and myself we decides to take him out of MTA and put him back in reading recovery, and also I found a tutor outside of school about two hours away that I take him to every Saturday morning for two hours. I asked a recommended tutor here in town and was given a list of about 40 tutors. In the town that is two hours away (where I have family and friends) I was given a tutor that is recommended by everyone that I have spoke to of Dylans problem. This tutor says Dylan is not Dyslexic and that he just has not been taught. She says that all kids do not learn the same way. So anyway she had to start over with him, teaching him the way that she teaches her homeschool kids which seems to be helping Dylan alot. So she is just know starting him on reading and also having to refer back to her flip chart on sounds that he learned to be able to sound out words that he does not know. So for about 5 months he has been going to her and I see improvement in his spelling and in his reading but not enought to pass the taks test. So he just failed the taks test and will be given another one this month and if he does not pass this one the last one will be on July 2nd. Dylan was tested and I was told he is reading in 1st grade level and now his math is 2nd grade. 3rd grade has alot of reading problems for math and that is where he is having most of his problems. So I was wondering if anyone out there has any advise for me. I would appreciate it.
