Honesty in Sharing Glucose Numbers

I sometimes find that my son does not want to tell me his real glucose reading because he does not want me to worry. Has enyone else experienced that.

Ron, I've had type I diabetes for over 15 years now. I was 19 when I was diagnosed. I was one of those teenagers/tweens that would not share glucose numbers with friends or family. I heard from other diabetics that many go through the same experience. As long as your son knows that he is under good control there is nothing to worry about but I do understand your worries in case his glucose control gets out of hand. I think that this might be only a temporary phase he is going through. Being a diabetic for so long, he must be well educated about his condition!

Koufitir, thanks for the words of encouragement. I hope your control is going well. Have you tried the pump?

My child has juvenile diabetes. He is older now, but we did have success by being very open with his friend's parents. As example, when he went to birthday parties, the parents would have diet items like crystal light.

Ronald, Yes I am on the pump and I love it! I can only recommend it. My glucose levels have improved dramatically and I was able to have two healthy pregnancies. The pump changed my life. If your son is not on the pump yet, I would highly recommend talking about it to his endocrinologist or diabetes educator. I know a great diabetes educator here in the Bay Area, who is great working with the pump! Rika

Excellent. He has an endocrinologist but is not on the pump.

Thanks for your information.
