Moving from Slovenia to New Jersey...how do I know which grade my 8 yrs old twins should enroll in?

Hi everyone! I love this site. I have been trying to find out what grade my twin boys (they will be 9 on April 28th) should be in when we move to NJ ?
Here in Slovenia, they are currently in 3rd grade.

I am not sure what the NJ (Burlington County) age requirements are for 2nd graders and 3rd graders.

Do any of you know?

Can any of you tell me where I could get a definitive answer?

I am panicked because I am trying to get my kids ready for the move and so I don't know if I shoudl focus on a 2nd grade U.S. currriculum or 3rd grade U.S. curriculum.

Please help!!

I really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Irene

Hi Irene,
First welcome to the U.S.! As a former 3rd grade teacher I had students in my class who were 9 yrs. old. In the U.S. children aged 9 are usually ending their third grade experience and entering 4th grade. So I would focus on those two areas.

Here is the districts website:
http://www.burlington-nj.net/

Also, I have provided a link to New Jersey's state standards. I do know that in NJ the students are required, at the least, to leanr what the state has set forth. The district may add to that set of standards, but will not take any away.

If you have any questions just email or call them, I am sure they will help you out. I hope we have helped you and thanks for coming to our site. We are very pleased that you are happy with our site. If you have any other questions please continue to post them!

Hi Michael,
Thanks so much for your help! I think you're right. I called the prospective school yesterday and spoke with the guidance counselor there. She was very positive and told me to prepare the twins for 3rd grade. Either way , she will test them for reading so they may have to be put in 2nd grade ( ;o(   I would not be so happy with the latter, but I guess I will do what is best for my kids, right?

Thanks again! I can't wait to get back to the States!
