Group Overview
- Description:
- As one of the most popular, yet controversial, music genres in the world, Hip-Hop,
also known as rap music, has made its way into mainstream popular culture with
support from males and females of all different age groups, ethnicities, cultures and
social classes. Hip-Hop has become more than a culture but a lifestyle to many
modern youth around the world. In France, this evolving political movement “has
become a social and cultural phenomenon for adolescents.” (Iwamoto, Creswell &
Caldwell 2007) Encompassing creativity and controversy, this evolving youth culture
will expose the negatives as well as the positives of modern American society.
Creating opportunity, sense of identity and self-empowerment for urban youth today.
“Hip-Hop is now; it’s in your face, and its real and honest” (Taylor & Taylor
2007). Hip-Hop is an evolving youth political movement and “rap music as well as
rap videos—if selected appropriately and facilitated by someone knowledgeable in
these areas—can be an effective educational tool” (Iwamoto et. Al. 2007).
Hip-Hop is a growing epidemic, a social and cultural phenomenon that must be used to
help educate our youth.
