Academic language

Academic Language refers to the words used in a classroom environment to discuss lessons and material. Generally it is thought that student must know these words to be successful in class. For example, it is important for students to understand words such as "essay" and "vocabulary" in a writing class to follow the lessons and complete the assignments. Researchers estimate that it takes five to seven years for most students to fully develop their academic language skills, whereas students with particular academic or language challenges may need up to ten years.
