Children and Adolescents at Risk for Mental Health Problems

Factors such as physical abuse, emotional abuse or neglect, harmful stress, discrimination, poverty, loss of a loved one, frequent relocation, alcohol or other drug use, trauma, and exposure to violence put children and adolescents at risk for the development of mental health problems. Many local, state, and federal agencies have implemented programs designed to lessen the effects of these factors.
