- Maintenance Bilingual Education (MBE)
- There is debate among teachers and administrators responsible for bilingual programs on how long and in what way students' home languages should be incorporated into the curriculum before a full transition is made to English. Maintenance Bilingual Education (MBE), also known as Late-Exit Bilingual Education are founded on the idea that it is most effective for students to be exposed to their home languages for longer before the class becomes English-only. Late-exit programs often use home language instruction at least 40 percent of the time throughout elementary school, even for those students who are fluent English proficient.
