Maintenance Bilingual Education (MBE)

There is debate among teachers and administrators responsible for bilingual programs on how long and in what way students' home languages should be incorporated into the curriculum before a full transition is made to English. Maintenance Bilingual Education (MBE), also known as Late-Exit Bilingual Education are founded on the idea that it is most effective for students to be exposed to their home languages for longer before the class becomes English-only. Late-exit programs often use home language instruction at least 40 percent of the time throughout elementary school, even for those students who are fluent English proficient.
