A Master's degree is a graduate degree granted to those individuals who successfully complete the specific program requirements, which usually include a 1-2 year full-time academic commitment and a significant research effort. There are several types of Master's degrees: (1) a M.A. or M.S., a Master's of Arts or and of Science, respectively, is awarded for advanced scholarship in a discipline in the liberal arts and sciences; (2) a professional Master's degree such as a M.B.A. or M.Ed., a Master's in business administration and in education, respectively; and (3) a secondary professional degree for those who have an existing professional career such as a Masters of Laws (LL.M.) or a Masters of Science in medical specializations (M.S.).
