Mathematics Literacy

Mathematics literacy is an abstract term that refers, broadly, to an individual's ability to incorporate mathematical skills in a constructive, conscientious, and concerted manner into his or her life. More specifically, mathematics literacy requires an ability to identify and understand the role mathematics plays in the world and to utilize mathematics to make informed decisions. Illustrations of mathematics literacy may include (1) making well-founded financial decisions on investments and purchases or (2) voting for a political candidate because the policies he or she endorses are attractive after reviewing analyses on them.
