Metaphor

A figure of speech in which two things are compared using non-literal terms. To say, "Tom was drowning in money" is a metaphor meaning that Tom has an abundance of money. Similes are a commonly used subset of metaphors which use "like" or "as" to make a comparison. (E.g.: "He is strong as an ox.")
