Poverty: The Census Bureau establishes the poverty levels in the United States by family income, adjusting the value for different family sizes and situations. For example, single-parent homes with several children have a lower threshold for poverty than two-parent homes with one or two children because it is more difficult for the former to survive with so many more financial obligations.
