Underneath all the adventure is a sophisticated reading program based on nearly three years and five million dollars in research, developed by a team of dedicated behavioral and learning scientists.
The Learning Experience
Headsprout Early Reading teaches kids through direct, positive experience what most adults take for granted: that letters and sounds go together to make words, words go together to make sentences, and sentences go together to make stories.
The engaging and interactive activities in the Headsprout program adapt to each child’s individual learning style and pace, providing one-on-one instruction and support every step of the way. Headsprout Early Reading provides approximately 30 hours of on-line instruction (eighty 20-minute lessons). As a child goes through the program, they learn to read over 80 Headsprout stories independently, many with words sounded out and read for the first time!
Whether your child is just starting to recognize letters, or is in the beginning stages of learning to read, this program can kick-start their progression towards becoming a skilled and fluent reader.
The Program
Headsprout Early Reading is organized into 80 interactive episodes. The earliest episodes begin with the fundamentals, and build upon these skills in each session through guided practice, repetition, and cumulative review. Off–line stories are used throughout the program to practice, firm, and extend skills learned online. And parents receive detailed progress reports so they can track their child’s improvement. Here’s how it works:
- Fun Lessons. Each lesson appears as an interactive, animated web episode. At 3 to 5 episodes per week, a child will be able to complete the entire program in as little as 16 weeks.
- Tailored Learning: No child is the same. That’s why Headsprout adjusts learning to each child’s individual pace. The program immediately fine-tunes itself to offer the best lesson for that learner by measuring the learner’s click rate, error pattern, and the ratio of correct answers and mistakes.
- Practice and Review: Practice makes perfect. Headsprout gives learners lots of opportunities to flex their reading muscles. Skills are revisited, reused, and extended, and readers exit each session with the tools they need to proceed. The program allows kids to practice until they have a skill down pat, and are ready to move on to the next session.
The end result is that children feel less frustration while learning to read. The Headsprout learning program has been carefully designed to ensure that children experience success from the very beginning. This reduces the frustration of trial-and-error learning. And when a child makes a mistake, the program provides just the right amount of help to ensure success on the next try. Each Headsprout lesson builds on the skills taught in the one before it. Through highly interactive, positive experiences, a child learns that letters make words, words make sentences, and sentences make stories.
