How It Works
Headsprout's Characters
Headsprout is organized into 80 Web-based interactive episodes, each between 15 and 30 minutes long.
The earliest episodes begin with the fundamentals, but the lessons gradually increase in difficulty, building upon the skills developed in previous sessions. Each episode supports your child’s success through guided practice, repetition, and cumulative review. Kids can follow the adventures of the Headsprout characters and share in their excitement as they complete a variety of learning-to-read tasks and are rewarded for their success.
Headsprout includes detailed progress reports and a variety of printed books to practice independent reading off-line as well.
Books are an essential part of the program—every few lessons a child receives a Headsprout booklet, to encourage independent reading. The skills for reading the booklets are directly taught in the online episodes and allow your child to make a visual connection between what they’re learning on the computer, and what appears in printed books. Also, you’ll have access to flashcards and a variety of companion stories that your child can read, color, and share.
It’s never too early to learn! Headsprout also provides general computer skill practice.
Of course, kids can’t use an interactive program easily if they can’t use a mouse. Have a child who is anything but mouse savvy? Never fear! Headsprout has designed “Mousing Around”, a program that provides practice in all the mouse movements and types of activities your child will experience in Headsprout Reading. Most parents find that poor mouse skills improve significantly after just a few episodes. Click here for mousing around.
