In the City of Ember, it is always night. The only "daylight" is artificial, produced by a fleet of floodlamps that tower above the streets. Then one day, the lights go out. The government insists that all is well, despite flickering lights and dwindling supplies, but 12-year-old Lina Mayfleet suspects otherwise. When she finds an ancient paper that hints at a land of light, just beyond Ember's borders, she and her friend Doon determine to find a way out. A well written novel, full of the excitement and pain of growing up. (Yearling, $5.99)
