We're not quite sure how this classic escaped becoming a household name, but if your child is not yet familiar with it, he's in for a true treat. Packed with adventure and fun, but gentle and sweet at the same time, this story about a set of cats who are born with wings wraps a tale of high adventure around a core message: it's not always easy to feel different and to be yourself. First graders, struggling with what it means to feel little and big at the same time, will identify with these cats, out on their own in the big bad world. A simply fantastic read aloud, but great for new chapter book readers, too. (Scholastic, $11.77)
