Earwig and the Witch

Earwig’s never been told she’s the daughter of a witch, but she does have a surprisingly easy time getting what she wants. So it comes as quite a shock when she secretly hopes the couple who show up at her orphanage won’t pick her, and they do anyway. It turns out that her new mother doesn’t want a child at all-- she wants a servant. Soon Earwig turns the tables on this witch-in-disguise, with help from a plucky cat. If your child has never had the pleasure of cracking open a Diana Wynne Jones book, now’s the time to start. Irreverant writing and quirky pen and ink illustrations make this a magical little feast.(HarperCollins Publishers , $7.99)
