Learning to read can be an intimidating process. Turn down the pressure with this game, our favorite in this first-rate series. The set comes with a short story that introduces rhyming word families and a pile of colorful cardboard tiles. Sort of like Scrabble for beginners, each player must build words using the tiles in his hand, slapping a "fr" on an "og" or a "w" on a "ow". While the book is weak, the game is a huge hit with kids, who get immense satisfaction in laying down tiles. You can almost see the wheels turning as they mouth the sounds each letter set makes. A major confidence booster for soon-to-be readers and a bargain to boot. (Innovative Kids, $9.99)
