If your child loved reading The Giver, she’ll be hooked on this final chapter of the four-part series. Readers will get to reunite with Gabe, the light-eyed baby, and his older “brother” Jonas after they’ve grown up. But this time the story is told from someone else’s perspective—Gabe’s mother Claire. You’ll go back in time with our heroine, to when she is first given the job of Birthmother at age twelve. Like all Vessels after birth, she gives up her son without ever even seeing him, to be assigned to a couple in the community. Continuing from where The Giver left off, you’ll travel with Claire on a harrowing journey to find Gabe after he and Jonas escape from their community. Claire’s labor of love is both bone-chilling and heartwarming all at the same time. We highly recommend buying the entire Giver series, a must-read that will leave your teen thinking about greater themes of society, conformity, and the meaning of perseverance.
