# Catch Those Fish!

## Learning Objectives

Students will be able to correctly order numbers and demonstrate an understanding of correct one-to-one correspondence between numbers and objects. Students will be able to draw lines between an object and its corresponding number, understanding that each object can be represented by only one number.

## Lesson

### Introduction (5 minutes)

• Read aloud One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss, or use this read aloud link to play a recording of the book.
• Tell your students that they have the challenge of counting fish and keeping numbers in the correct order!

### Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (5 minutes)

• Using the SMART Board slide, model the process of ordering numbers and placing one number with each fish, moving the sticks and writing the correct number below.
• Emphasize that each fish should have only one number.
• If you donâ€™t have SMART Board access, you can use the fish manipulatives and wooden sticks to demonstrate one-to-one correspondence.

### Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (5 minutes)

• Distribute one sandwich bag of wooden sticks to each student or pair of students (if you want the students to work in pairs).
• Tell your students that you would like them to put their numbers in order and match the fish with the numbers when you call a certain number out.
• Ask your students to use a wooden stick to connect each fish with a number.
• Call out several numbers, and have your students practice ordering the numbers correctly and corresponding each number with a fish.
• Scan the room after each number to check for accuracy. For example, call out the number three, and have the students work on making the number three with their fish, wooden sticks, and numbers.

### Independent Working Time (10 minutes)

• Since this lesson primarily teaches one-to-one correspondence between an object through correct ordering, provide the students with a visual with the numbers written in order on the board.
• Have the students complete the Fish in the Pond worksheet, cutting and gluing the fish to match the number designated on each pond.
• Direct your students to complete ponds 1, 2, and 4, labeling each fish and drawing a line between each fish and the number.
• Have your students complete the 9 pond as a challenge question.

## Extend

### Differentiation

• Enrichment: Challenge your students to create their own fish on the SMART Board or on a piece of paper. Direct your students to draw their own fish and match those fish with a corresponding number, drawing a line between the fish and the number. Students can work together to make a paper slide video with their products.
• Support: Modify the Fish in a Pond worksheet for students who have difficulty placing the correct number of fish in each pond. Reduce the number of fish in the pond, or do not have the students draw lines matching the numeral with the fish.

### Technology Integration

• As an extension, have the students create a paper slide video with different numbers of fish represented.

## Review

### Assessment (5 minutes)

• Give your students an index card assessment using a specified number of fish.
• Have your students write the numbers in the correct order and then draw a line between each fish and the total number represented.

### Review and Closing (5 minutes)

• Tell your students that they can count fish and many other things!
