Learning Objectives

Students will find the quotients created with four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors.

Lesson

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • To introduce the lesson, begin with reviewing the meaning of division vocabulary words such as dividend, the number to be divided, divisor, the number that divides into another, and quotient, the answer to a division problem, by using the Division: Finding the Quotient worksheet.
  • Display the worksheet on the board or write an example.
  • Have students identify the 3 components of the problem: dividend, divisor, and quotient.
  • Students can go through a few of the examples and identify the parts if necessary for comprehension.
  • Explain to students that today they are going to find whole number quotients of problems using whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (10 minutes)

  • Using the Solve the Division Riddle worksheet, solve each problem by dividing.
  • Use the letter key to solve the riddle.
  • Tell students that they just used two-digit divisors with three-digit dividends to find whole number quotients.
  • Tell students that the remainder of the lesson will be focused on using two-digit divisors with four-digit dividends.

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (10 minutes)

  • Pass out the Division Duplication worksheet and allow students to work in groups or pairs.
  • Students should use this as an opportunity to observe how their partner works out problems and to learn from them.
  • Allow students to ask questions and work through the problems.

Independent Working Time (25 minutes)

  • Pass out the Divide and Conquer worksheet and allow students to work independently to complete the problems.
  • Tell students that this work should be completed independently.
  • Invite students to ask you for help if they need it.
  • If time permits, allow students to show their work to the class.

Differentiation

  • Enrichment: Advanced student can create their own problems to solve which may include remainders.
  • Support: Less advanced students can partner with another student or work with you to walk through each question until they feel comfortable working alone.

Review

Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Ensure that students understand the three main vocabulary terms for these kinds of problems: dividend, divisor, and quotient.
  • Put a sample problem on the board and have students identify the components and solve it.

Review and Closing (5 minutes)

  • Have students create a three-minute paper that describes their learning experience today.
  • Allow them to share their written responses verbally with the class, group, or partner.
