Learning Objectives

Students will be able to arrange and count objects to match a quantity associated with a numeral. Students will demonstrate understanding of the relationship between numbers and their quantities.


Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Gather a small group of students at a table.
  • Give each student a small object such as a toy, counting cube, or cracker.
  • Ask students to identify how many objects there are.
  • Have students count aloud with you as you point to or move objects individually into a group at the center of the table.
  • Tell students that the last word stated when counting tells the quantity, or how many of something.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (5 minutes)

  • Give a counting fish, cube, or aquarium stone to a few but not all of the students gathered.
  • Use a shark puppet or your hand to pretend to be a shark and go around the table "biting" the objects that students have in front of them.
  • Count objects out loud as you are "biting" each one. Have students count along.
  • Model writing the number, and place the number magnet or card on the board to match the quantity.
  • Place the objects in the middle of the table, and label the group with the quantity.
  • Repeat the procedure with a different number of students and objects.
  • Invite your students to compare the quantities and their numbers.

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (5 minutes)

  • Give each student an opportunity to pick a "shark tooth" from the bucket.
  • Assist students when needed in identifying numerals.
  • Instruct students to pick the same number of counting objects from the bucket to match the numeral.
  • Have students place the matching quantity of objects to the shark tooth number.

Independent Working Time (5 minutes)

  • Tell students that now they can be the shark!
  • Instruct students to use their hands as shark mouths, and have them scoop objects from the bucket.
  • Ask your students to count their objects and label the group with the number that tells "how many".
  • Check students' work for accuracy.



  • Enrichment: Invite your students to scoop sets of objects. Place students in separate groups and have their "shark hands" eat the group with more objects to compare greater than (more) and less than (less). Have them play the Comparing Quantities Quiz.
  • Support: Provide a number grid or shark worksheet provided with designated spaces for quantity. Give your students the shark coloring worksheet.

Assessment (5 minutes)

  • Have your students complete the Number Match Up worksheet.

Review and Closing (5 minutes)

  • Tell your students that you can guess how many worksheets you will collect by counting the students working on them.
  • When you collect them, model counting to check your answer.
  • Challenge students to identify other ways to determine quantity during daily routines, such as passing out 15 napkins at lunch time.
  • For homework, ask your students to name a way that they or their family members use that skill at home.
