Sticky Subtraction

Don't put students in a sticky situation by not having them practice their subtraction facts! This lesson will give them plenty of practice, both in a group setting and individually to help them succeed later on.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to increase their fluency of subtraction facts.

Lesson

Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Gather the students together in the class meeting place.
  • Tell the students that today they will practice subtraction facts with answers from 5-10.
  • Define subtraction, the process of taking one value away from another, minus, decreased by, and equals, alike in quantity.
  • On the board, draw a rectangle and divide it into six boxes.
  • Write one number, for 5 to 10, in each space.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling (10 minutes)

  • Have several sticky notes with subtraction problems written on them.
  • Choose one and read it to the students. For example: 13-6=__.
  • Show the problem to the students.
  • Tell the students to solve the problem. Have them discuss their answer with the person sitting next to them, then raise their hand with the correct answer.
  • Call on a student to share their answer. If it is correct, let that student come up and read the subtraction fact on the sticky note.
  • Tell that student to find the correct answer space on the board and place the sticky note in the appropriate space.
  • Continue in the same manner with at least four more subtraction problems.

Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling (15 minutes)

  • Now divide the students into four or five groups, depending on the number of students in the class.
  • Use six sticky notes and write one answer choice on each using the numbers 5 - 10. Place each one in a pocket of the pocket chart.
  • Have at least 20-25 sticky notes with subtraction facts written on them.
  • Choose a sticky note and read the subtraction fact to the students.
  • Show the problem to the students and have them read it aloud.
  • In their groups, tell them to solve the problem and raise their hand when they have the answer.
  • Select a student to give the answer.
  • Place that sticky note in the correct pocket.
  • Now pass out 4-5 sticky notes with subtraction problems to each group. They are to solve them and put them in the correct pocket.
  • After each group is finished, read each problem with the answer.

Independent Working Time (15 minutes)

  • Pass out the subtraction worksheet of your choice from the Subtraction Workbook.
  • Read and work the first two problems together.
  • Instruct the students they are to work on their own and finish.
  • Circulate the room and give assistance to those students who are having difficulty.

Differentiation

  • Enrichment: Advanced students can create their own problems and place them on the board in the correct spaces or in the pocket charts.
  • Support: Struggling students can write the subtraction facts from the pocket chart into their math journals. On a separate page in their math journals, they should write their answer at the top of the page. One answer on each page. For example: 5 at the top on one page, turn that page and write 6 at the top on the back. Continue through ten. Let these students copy the facts from each row on the correct page so that all the problems equal that number. Then they can practice reading the problems.

Review

Assessment (10 minutes)

  • Give each student a sticky note and a subtraction flash card.
  • Tell them to put the sticky note on the answer square.
  • Solve the problem and write the answer on the sticky note.
  • Check for accuracy and watch for those who still may need assistance.

Review and Closing (5 minutes)

  • Gather the students back together and let them read the problems for each answer on the pocket chart.
  • Remind them as they practice these facts that this skill gets easier and faster the longer they do it.
