A Clever and Relevant Teen Read
Turn off the TV and hand your teen a clever and relevant book. Does my Head Look Big in This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah (Orchard Books 2005) is a sweet coming-of-age novel perfect for a teen struggling to fit in. Although aimed for female readers, if boys give it a chance they might just love the witty voice and the courageous heroine.
The novel's about a sixteen-year-old girl named Amal who lives in Australia and deals with teenage issues: body image, school, friends, alcohol, and, of course, boys. But, this book stands out because Amal is Muslim and has decided to wear the hijab (headscarf) full time, meaning in front of any males who aren't part of the her family. Adding to Amal's troubles, she attends a prep school where if you even have a pimple, you're a social outcast.
The story takes place a year after September 11th, and although it's set in Australia, the issues are international. When Amal decides to show her belief in such a public manner, she deals with people blaming terrorism on Islam and just blatant racism. This makes her want to try harder to stay true to her beliefs. But can she resist dating (or kissing!) until she marries?
Don't worry about the book turning into a lecture or a sermon. Although there are moments when the morals are a little overstated, this book frames deep thoughts with a teenage attitude. Plus there are well-rounded characters from different ethnicities and faiths throughout the story, so although the focus is on Islam, your child will learn about more than one belief system.
The novel's an easy and fast read, with relevant information about understanding other people, cultures, and beliefs. Not only will your teen empathize with the likable Amal, she'll see how everyone at some point feels like an outsider.
