A few words about me...
Dr. Tom Houlihan recently transitioned from a 35-year career in public education and is now engaged in consulting and organizational development with clients both nationally and internationally. In addition, he is creating a national leadership institute in conjunction with the International Center for Leadership in Education (Albany, New York).
Tom has been an active supporter of North Carolina State University and the College of Education. He recently served as the initial chair of the Friday Institute National Advisory Board, helping to launch the Friday Institute and lead the advisory board.
He previously served as Executive Director of the Council of Chief State School Officers, a Washington, DC-based organization serving the nation’s chief education officers in 54 states/territories. In that role Tom was responsible for advocacy services with Congress, the White House and the US Department of Education on behalf of public education. In addition, his organization was directly responsible for assisting states in the implementation of the No Child Left Behind federal legislation. Prior to serving CCSSO, Tom served as President/CEO of the North Carolina Partnership for Excellence.
Dr. Houlihan previously served as Senior Education Advisor to Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., Governor of North Carolina. With a background as a teacher, high school principal and superintendent, Dr. Houlihan is the first educator in history to hold Cabinet level status in a North Carolina Governor’s administration.
An author and frequent speaker/consultant, Dr. Houlihan was selected “Superintendent of the Year” in North Carolina and was one of four finalists for national “Superintendent of the Year.” He has also been honored by his alma mater, Indiana University, as a distinguished alumni award winner for contributions to education. Dr. Houlihan has written three books and published over 200 professional and news media articles.
