A few words about me...

Before coming to Flinders University in 1992, Larry had a twenty year career in the South Australian Department of Education and Children’s Services in a range of roles including classroom teaching (mainly secondary), faculty coordination, curriculum advising for the disadvantaged country areas programme and in educational psychology. Larry is currently a Professor in the School of Education at Flinders. He is the Associate Head (Teaching and Learning) for the Faculty of Education, Humanities, Law and Theology. He teaches in areas related to peer relationships and student behaviour and in introductory research methods topics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research interests are concerned with boys’ and girls’ aggressive behaviours, especially teenage girls’ indirect aggression. He is a chief investigator on the national mental health Kidsmatter evaluation and on an ARC linkage grant to investigate well-being in southern Adelaide school communities. He supervises Honours, Educational Doctorate and PhD students. He has international collaboration with colleagues in Britain and has active involvement with the International Society for Research on Aggression. He has administrative experience as School Dean, as Associate Dean and in coordinating the Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Special Education programmes. His recent consultancies include critiquing and technical editing a report on good practice principles in youth development for the South Australian Government Office of Youth Affairs and evaluations of Federal Government Quality Teaching Programme Projects.



Research Interests

Larry’s research is concerned with gender differences in aggressive behaviours among school students. He has developed expertise in the area of teenage girls’ indirect forms of aggression. He uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods. His current research projects include:



A collaborative investigation with Dr Neil Duncan of Wolverhampton University into teenage girls and their aggressive social power.

An investigation into teenage boys’ aggression toward girls (in association with Professors Rosalind Shute, Ballarat University, and Phillip Slee, Flinders University).

Membership of the Flinders University evaluation team for the national Kidsmatter trial being conducted in 2007-2008.

One of the chief investigators on an ARC linkage grant investigating well-being in a group of schools in the southern suburbs of Adelaide (2007-09).

A chief invesigator on a DEST funded study into the human dimensions of covert and especially cyber bullying.
